Improving Cancer Risk Estimates in Nuclear Medicine

Over the past decade the subject of rates of cancer increase within the population due to exposure to radiation has been widely discussed. Nuclear Medicine for most is one diagnostic imaging modality that is the least understood by patients and referring physicians. This article makes the case that the diagnostic benefits from being exposed to short-lived radiopharmaceuticals far outweigh any potential increase in the occurrence of cancer as a result of the test. Patients and referring physicians need a better understanding of the benefits of nuclear imaging and how these benefits outweigh any risk.
