Deep Machine Learning, now called AI, continues to be a popular topic within the health care community. In particular, imaging providers are demonstrating a lot of interest and being targeted by commercial companies offering AI solutions. Experts warn that in many cases AI is a solution seeking a problem. They caution before purchasing an AI solution, the imaging department must identify a problem and then evaluate whether or not the AI solution will address the issue. Without this approach, AI can become an expenditure that drains badly needed capital and adds an additional burden to staffing without adding any improvement

The SNMMI recently provided comment on the proposed 2021 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule (MPFS). In their comments, they noted that reimbursement to Nuclear Medicine will be reduced by 8% without Congress addressing the Budget Neutrality Factor. In its comments, the Society went on to say these reductions, if implemented when more than 90% of those surveyed say they’ve seen a decrease in nuclear medicine imaging during the Covid-19 pandemic, will cause a direct negative result in the delivery of services for Medicare beneficiaries as practitioners and facilities move toward consolidation of services as a way of coping with the financial
