With reactor production coming back on line, Molybdenum-99 supply may soon return to normal

Last month the nuclear medicine community was warned of a shortage of Mo-99 and the resultant rationing of Tc-99m radiopharmaceuticals.

The news is improving as reactors return from planned and unplanned shutdowns. It looks as if we are back to normal in the coming days and weeks. All of this does emphasize the need for additional sources of supply for Mo-99 in the U.S. and elsewhere. It’s important that the nuclear medicine community continue to place pressure on our government to make certain that this critical supply of Mo-99 for nuclear medicine imaging is stabilized with additional production centers.
